Established in 1960 as a bakery, it transitioned to speciality cheese and fine foods in 1972. The business stocks between 180–200 varieties of cheese sourced from the UK and internationally, alongside cured meats, charcuterie, olives, fresh bakery products, wines, ports and around 1500 ambient products including oils, preserves, chocolates and speciality groceries.

The business is a founding member of the Guild of Fine Foods and a member of the Specialist Cheesemakers Association. Staff travel internationally to judge cheese competitions and source new products. The Cheese Hamlet also supplies gift hampers, celebration cakes for weddings and events, and operates a mail order service with overnight tracked delivery. Coffee is sourced from a specialist roaster with roots in Manchester, and the shop stocks locally-produced teas and coffees.

Awards include three consecutive wins for Speciality Cheese Retailer of the Year and multiple Delicatessen of the Year accolades. Many products stocked have been recognised at the Great Taste Awards.
